Stand-off Munitions Disruption (SMUD)
The XM 107 .50 caliber sniper rifle is employed by U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams. The increasing sophistication and enhanced lethality of U.S. and foreign munitions has forced the EOD soldier to attempt remote procedures to disrupt and dispose of UXOs on the battlefield. The technique
of SMUD is one method that has proven successful in many instances. This technique allows the EOD soldier to attack hazardous munitions outside the detection range of the
fuze sensor and fragmentation effects of the UXO.

This scene was based on an operation performed in a Kuwaiti Ammunition Storage Point that detonated and threw munitions for miles around it.
